The best teams to win the UCL in the 2000s

The UCL has been the biggest club competition on Earth for a long time and in the 21st century only 10 teams have won it, in this blog I will rank them and if they have won it more than once I’ll put the year they won it e.g. 2022 Real Madrid and Real Madrid 2016 are different teams.

23: 2004 Porto

If this were in terms of manager or tactics Porto would have been in the top ten or five but it must be said they are one of the weakest teams ever to win the Champions League and are therefore last. However, their team was not weak just not in contention with other teams in this list.

22: 2021 Chelsea

This team is one of the most recent to win but it wasn’t until the win against Porto, that Chelsea fans started to believe that this was almost crushed as Porto scored a goal. Chelsea managed to hang on though and beat Real Madrid to make the final where they played Man City, Pep overthought it and lost in one of the most boring finals ever in the Champions League. Congrats are in order for Chelsea though as they were underdogs to win.

21: 2010 Inter Milan

Inter won only 7 of their 13 matches to win the Champions League in 2010, their biggest win by 2 goals and this was against prime Barcelona so Mourinho did well to win this one, however, they just barely got past the group stage where they drew to Rubin and beat Moscow by a goal in both legs to get to the Semis. Finally, they beat Bayern 2-0 to write their names in the history books, a solid job but they didn’t do very well against small teams.

20: 2012 Chelsea

Chelsea skimmed through many stages including the group stage where they needed a win on the final day, then they had to come back from 3-1 down against Napoli, then on a magical night after a red card, Chelsea managed to come back from two down and draw 2-2 with Barca. Finally, on penalties against Bayern Munich, they scraped a win to become UCL champions.

19: 2003 Milan

To qualify Milan drew to Slovan Liberec but won on aggregate meaning they were into Group G. Milan topped Group G beating Deportivo de La Coruna on goal difference, then beat Ajax by a goal, they drew with Inter twice but then beat them on goal difference and finally drew with Juventus but beat them on penalties, it was a lot of drawing and winning by a goal or goal difference for UCL winners.

18: 2001 Bayern Munich

Losing to PSG and drawing to Rosenberg and Helsingborg, all very weak teams, Bayern managed to win Group F (the qualifier group) and went on to only drop 5 points in Group C against big teams like Arsenal and Lyon. Then Bayern beat Manchester United and Real Madrid on aggregate by 3 goals. then to win the UCL they beat Valencia by a single penalty kick.

17: 2005 Liverpool

This team was good but they were underdogs in almost every game they played, the final was of course what will be remembered, where Liverpool showed courage and discipline to come back from 3-0 down and win on penalties against Milan, their star player was undoubtedly Steven Gerrard. On their way to Istanbul, they beat many legendary teams.

16: 2008 Manchester United

This team will be remembered for their legendary front three of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez, they beat Barcelona, Roma and Lyon to create a final between them and Chelsea where they won on penalties in a massive all-English final.

15: 2022 Real Madrid

Real Madrid is currently the best team in the world but is nothing compared to prime Real Madrid who won back-to-back UCLs 3 times in a row which is nothing compared to Real Madrid that won the European Cup 5 times in a row. This team has a good but ageing midfield that luckily can be subbed off for their young players, their attack is world-class but miss a real force on the right wing and their defence is probably the worst part but has Courtois in goal to fix any mistakes made.

14: 2019 Liverpool

Liverpool barely got through the group stage, only beating Napoli by head-to-head away goals they beat both Bayern Munich and Porto 3-1 after 0-0 draws and the rest… is history. Of course, this team is remembered for coming from 3-0 down to win 4-3 on aggregate against Barcelona and they also walked to the trophy being Spurs in the final.
